Afrogem offers discerning buyers, seeking rarity and beauty, exceptional jewellery. Our company ethos combines innovation and tradition to harness our continent’s assets sustainably.
Afrogem was established in 1966, but only became the groundbreaking enterprise it is today when Ingrid and Peter Gilson took over in 1983. Soon after, they pioneered a complimentary behind-the-scenes tour of their design and production studios. The Afrogem Fabrication Tour created a bridge between consumer knowledge and industry expertise, giving jewellery buyers the opportunity to observe skilled professionals at work for the first time in South Africa.
As a leader in our field, we are in the unique position of having the only tour of a working factory that uses state-of-the-art jewellery mass-production techniques. To this day, the Afrogem Fabrication Tour continues to be acknowledged as the most detailed and extensive jewellery tour in South Africa.
Your tour begins in our lecture room, where you can sip orange juice or sparkling wine — sourced from boutique Cape winemakers — whilst you gain insight into the creation of our jewellery portfolio. Our lecture room houses the largest private mineral collection of precious and semi-precious gemstones in southern Africa.
After a short introductory video, you will be ushered upstairs by one of our knowledgeable guides to experience, firsthand, the fine craftsmanship of our goldsmiths and diamond setters. Many of our skilled staff trace their heritage directly to the Cape Malay who brought the art of gold and silver-smithing to our shores.
Your tour completes in our luxury showroom where you can browse our exquisite range at your leisure, or have a bespoke piece designed just for you. The Afrogem portfolio includes graded Tanzanites and diamonds, Tanzanite and diamond jewellery, as well as precious and semi-precious jewellery and gemstones.
All our gemstones are selected by experienced gemologists, assuring you of the value, both sentimental and financial, of any investment made at Afrogem.
Our curated collection of African curios means you can find the perfect memento of our great continent. The five-pointed Southern Cross pendant, a design inspired by a celestial constellation visible only in the southern hemisphere, is exclusive to Afrogem.
The tour is available in various languages and we welcome visitors from all over the world. Courtesy transfers are available, and our premises has secure, onsite parking.
Centrally located on Buitengracht Street between the V&A Waterfront and the Table Mountain Cable Station, a trip to Afrogem makes a wonderful interlude in any Cape Town sightseeing itinerary.
