Exploring Drakensberg KZN

It’s amazing how many times we can travel to the same province and get a completely different experience.  I fell completely inlove with Kwazulu Natal all over again, especifically the Drakensberg Mountains. I have done some research of the Drakensberg Mountains and found that It is the highest mountain range in the country, reaching an impressive 3 482 meters above sea level.  The picturesque views are ideal for photography and is something to write home about.

My exciting trip to the Drakensberg mountains started with a flight to O.R. Tambo Airport from there on a memorable, yet long and winding bus trip to the Alpine Heath Resort. Upon our arrival at night we were welcomed with a friendly smile and refreshments . Being ushered to our lodge with keys in hand,to my surprise I was given a luxurious double room en-suite with 2 x twin room beds for two other ladies to share. It was fitted with all the amenities, namely, telephone, hairdryer, satellite TV, a comfortable lounge, small patio and fireplace. It had a self catering kitchen area. If you needed ironing facilities you could call the reception area to assist.

I woke up to a picture canvas painting of a view. I could not wait to explore the resort. It took me a while to get to the reception area as I ventured through the

different pathways to get some pictures for this blog.  At some point I was gobsmacked with the views. I just stood there absorbing it all. Yesterday I came from a congested traffic infested suburb and here I find myself standing in this open space. Standing alone there in this hill I felt so at peace with myself. I was in no rush to go get my breakfast as I did not want to rush this experience.  On the way i spotted the pool area, mini gym, mini golf (putt-putt) and tennis courts. On arrival at reception, I went looking for the restaurant area. I spotted a beautiful peacock walking through the building as he was a regular guest. He was no was afraid of the guests passing him in the passage. We waited for the right moment to show off his beauty. Eventually I arrived at the restaurant and I was told it is halal friendly. They served the halal food separately.  The waiters was ready to assist with hot beverages.

After a lovely breakfast we hit the road and headed on to an awesome establishment place called Scootours. Not knowing what to expect , we were divided up into smaller groups. There are loads of fun activities. Perfect for team building and family fun. This is the one of the best places to add to a family vacation as it will definitely leave you with fond memories. I was excited to go and have some downhill fun only to discover it was a balancing act on two wheels. The rest of the group went zooming passed me with no problem at all. I ended up falling and got my leg wedged between the bike and the wheel. I ended up walking the rest of the way and still enjoyed it. My experience ended up being a walking hike, exhilarating and lots of fun.  We had other groups doing zip lining, paint-balling, king swing, tree climbing, abseiling and white water tubing not mentioning hair raising fun!

I stumbled across a chocolate shop called The Drakensberg Chocolate Memories They have free chocolate tasting of a range of delicious chocolate bars manufactured right in the Drakensberg. Their decadent Chocolate Fondue was definitely my favorite. To top it off you can drink your coffee or hot chocolate with Guinness Book of Records Award winning Berg chilli essence.

The group later went wine tasting and dinner at Cathedral Peak Wine Estate. Sun Set at this venue was breathtaking. Interesting fact that as much as the San peoples were the first people in the Republic of South Africa, Pinotage is the only truly South African wine variety. No South African wine can claim heritage without this as its base.

You can book in advance for wine tasting or lunch as we offer weddings and private functions on the estate.

Breakfast and Departure at Alpine Heath Resort. Winding bus trip back to O.R Tambo Intl. Airport to catch a flight back to Cape Town .

I must be honest I never thought Drakensberg mountains would be such fun. I prepared myself for the usual hikes and I left the Drakensberg filled with memories that will never escape me.  That is what travelling is all about, discovering new places as you travel from one place to another. KZN is so worth exploring. There is always something new to discover.
