Hunter’s Country House, Garden Route

Fragrant and colourful, Hunter’s Country House’s flourishing gardens create an idyllic setting for this luxurious retreat near Plettenberg Bay in the heart of South Africa’s fabulous Garden Route.

Hunter’s Country House combines gracious elegance with sheer comfort, impeccable service and warm hospitality…far from the madding crowd, yet conveniently close to a wide variety of leisure activities.

One of the first things guests notice about Hunter’s is its sense of “home” away from home. It starts at the beginning of the driveway with enticing views into secret gardens alive with butterflies and scented air. Pulling up to the House, the team that will welcome you and the House itself, just seem to embody a feeling of family and belonging – a coming home.

The individual thatched cottage suites are plush and peaceful, tastefully decorated in a restful palette, accented with a romantic touch. A privately positioned patio and garden makes for tranquil relaxation, reflection and reconnecting.

Each of Hunter’s 6 luxurious room types are individually designated and decorated with their own distinctive atmosphere. All have patios and gardens, and certain suites have their own plunge pool.

Enjoy refined country style dining at Sage @ Hunter’s or in one of the beautiful seating areas around the estate, and choose from the set menu with choices. For a casual lunch or dinner a la carte style, our award-winning Zinzi Restaurant is just a stroll from both Hunter’s and Tsala. Tsala offers a third option – it is the exquisite glass-walled dining room, which offers a la carte for lunch and dinner.

You can soak up the sun, read, enjoy a glass of wine or share your adventures with your family and friends. Explore the Hunter’s Estate taking-in the indigenous gardens and abundance of birdlife. Furthermore, you can enjoy a large pool with loungers to relax on, formal lounge and library with a fireplace, complimentary Wi-Fi, in-room pamper treatments and a designated play area for children up to 6 years old.

The ultimate family destination – something for everyone!

Visit Knysna!

The team at Knysna Tourism have invited all South Africans and foreign visitors to visit their fabulous town surrounded by forested mountains, rivers, a large lagoon and the Indian Ocean. The town and its surroundings offer the perfect summer break.

Known as the jewel of South Africa’s beautiful Garden Route, Knysna is the perfect destination for a holiday and its location is ideal for exploring the surrounding areas. With a host of varied accommodation available, from camping sites to 5-star hotels, there is something to suit every budget.

Make sure that you plan your holiday with enough days to explore the quaint town itself, which is a hub of craft shops, trendy cafés and flea-markets.

The famous Knysna Waterfront and Thesen Harbour Town are both popular for their numerous restaurants and shops, and are ideal spots to watch the boats go by while you sip a cappuccino or cocktail.

Revel in the scenic beauty of the natural forests and lakes, the vast estuary which flows into the Indian Ocean through two majestic rocky outcrops, the rivers and pristine beaches.

Play golf on a world-class course, take a ferry across the lagoon, sail through the heads, swim in the sea, go whale watching or bungee jumping… the choice is endless.

Nature lovers will relish the variety of activities. Try to spot the illusive Knysna Loerie (you will hear its call long before you see it), trace the prints of an elusive elephant in the Knysna Forest and delight in local flora such as coastal Fynbos and the milkwood tree.

Tourism activities in the town suffered minimal damage in the devastating June fires, apart from severe damage to Featherbed Nature Reserve and restaurant which have resulted in operations being temporarily suspended. The Featherbed Company’s other restaurants, ferries and boats – the iconic John Benn, the Paddle Cruiser and the Heads Explorer Catamaran – were not affected and are fully operational.

A number of accommodation establishments were destroyed or damaged but Knysna & Partners tourism board assures visitors that there is still plenty of accommodation available and the surrounding areas are ready to pick up the overflow.

The popular animal sanctuaries between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, including Knysna Elephant Park, Birds of Eden, Monkeyland and Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre are all operating as usual. In addition, SANParks’ picnic areas at Jubilee Creek and Diepwalle and the camping sites in Diepwalle are open and unaffected by the fires.

Simola, Pezula and Knysna Golf Courses are also open.

The town of Sedgefield is also welcoming visitors and has not lost any accommodation establishments. All tourist activities in the area are fully operational including the popular Scarab and Wild Oats Famers’ Markets.

These are the top 10 recommended activities in the greater Knysna area:

  1. Cruise the lagoon on a ferry, inflatable boat, yacht or kayak.
  2. Explore the indigenous forests by foot, mountain bike, non-motorised scooter or jeep.
  3. Enjoy the rush of adventure activities including whale watching, surfing, paragliding and bungee jumping.
